I'm not sure how others do this, but this was the only way I could think of. I have several guitar building books and this step is never really explained. This worked, though.

Mortise cut into neck block. I ended up using a butt-joint instead because I mis-measured and made the neck too short to accommodate the tenon! The mortice was cut by making sucessive saw cuts on my sliding compound miter saw, then chiseling out the bits left between the saw kerfs.
